The other day I had an appointment to get my bridesmaid dress altered (it has a pretty serious V in the front). I found a woman who works out of her home, so I drove out to Archer, a tiny town outside of Rexburg. After my fitting, I got back in my car and started for home. As I drove away, a kind old man was out checking his mailbox, and he waved to me as I drove past him.
I always liked seeing my Dad do this with neighbors and other passersby. It is a symbol of acknowledgement and good will. This is an act that is rarely seen amongst those of my generation. Students walk to campus or down hallways without acknowledging that they are sharing that space with anyone else. They are either texting, jamming to whatever is playing on their ipod, or just not willing to make eye contact with anyone else. Now don't get me wrong, I've been guilty of doing these same things, but I don't want to be guilty. Today I am making a goal to be friendlier. I am going to strive to forget what other people may think of me and just be pleasant and kind to the people I encounter every day.

i was just talking to my sister about this. it's so weird. but it was opposite in ohio it seemed, high school was like that, NOBODY ever looked at each other even, then in my college in columbus everyone was super nice and smiled all the time.
I totally embarrassed her when i went to see her at school and told some girl in the hall that her hair was cute. after i passed the girl was all "i don't even know her..." like it was rude of me to compliment her. haha whatever!
Come to Texas and you see it everyday. That is maybe my favorite thing about TX...especially West Texas! :)
I've been thinking about this too. I pass so many people everyday where I live. Most people, including myself, don't make eye contact or say anything. You would think it'd be hard to ignore other people when you're sitting next to someone on the bus, or packed like sardines into a subway car, or standing in a crowd waiting for the crosswalk light to change, but people ignore others all the time. There are a few people I pass who are different; a man who waits for a taxi every morning on the front steps of our apartment building who always says good morning, the bus driver who says hello, and the hot dog vendor who is friendly even though I never buy anything. Those who do smile really make my day. I decided I want to smile and maybe make someone else's day too.
